Connecting a laptop (Youth Room)

1. Decide whether you want to use HDMI or VGA to connect. Not sure? See the bottom of this page.

2. Go to the wall plate at the front of the room (by the stage). The Youth Department usually keeps an HDMI and VGA cable ready to go. If the cables are not there, grab spares from the AV closet.

3. Make sure one end of the cable is plugged into the wall plate. If using VGA, be sure to connect the audio cable as well if you need sound. (This is not necessary for HDMI since picture and sound are transmitted on the same cable.)

4. Connect the other end of the cable to your device.

5. Make sure your device is on and sending video.

6. Go into the AV closet:

7. Locate the touchscreen in the equipment rack. If you see the screen below, the group before you left the system on. Turn the system off so we can start fresh.

8. Hit the big start button.

9. Turn the projector on using the button on the left side of the screen.

10. In the center section, select "HDMI/VGA Wall Plate" since that's where you plugged your computer in.

11. Laptop volume can be adjusted using the "Source Volume" control on the right side of the touchscreen screen.

When finished:

  1. On the upper right of the touchscreen, hit the red "System Shut Down" and confirm.

  2. Return cables as they were when you arrived. Make them look neat and tidy.

What are HDMI and VGA?

These are the names for the two types of connections we support. Here's what they look like:

Troubleshooting

I never see an image / screen is blank

  1. Is the cable plugged into your device all the way?

  2. Is the cable plugged into the port in the wall plate all the way? Sometimes people unplug it and don't plug it back in!

  3. Is your device video output actually enabled? (On Windows computers, try pressing the Windows key on the keyboard and the letter "P" at the same time, and choose "Duplicate")

Screen goes black after a while
